SESAR and Clean Sky Strengthen Coordination

SESAR and Clean Sky Strengthen Coordination for Innovative Aviation

Brussels, December 9, 2015: The Clean Sky and SESAR Joint Undertakings (JUs) have signed a Memorandum of Cooperation (MoC) in order to foster closer links between the two research and innovation (R&I) programs. The purpose of the MoC is to establish a cooperative framework between the two JUs, contributing to the sustainable development of the European air transport system.

Since 2011 SESAR JU and Clean Sky JU have exchanged information about their programs to ensure consistency where possible and avoid unnecessary overlap. Building on these efforts, the MoC establishes a framework for cooperation, covering where possible joint activities in relevant areas of R&D such as:

  • Avionics and ATM/communications navigation and surveillance infrastructure and services;
  • Mission and business trajectory management;
  • Assessing performance targets (in particular in the area of the environment) and the complementarity between both JUs.

The MoC will also facilitate a periodical exchange on the progress of both programs, as well as some coordination of joint stakeholder and communications activities. To implement the MoC, a steering committee will be set up, co-chaired by the Eric Dautriat, Clean Sky Executive Director and Florian Guillermet, SESAR JU Executive Director.

“The Memorandum of Cooperation between Clean Sky and SESAR is necessary to ensure a successful completion of our objectives. I am pleased to formalize today our efficient and smooth cooperation in the benefit of an innovative and competitive European aviation,” said Eric Dautriat, Clean Sky Executive Director.

“This Memorandum of Cooperation is an important step towards achieving our shared ambition of delivering high performing aviation for Europe. We look forward to working even closer with our colleagues in Clean Sky to optimize the value of both the programs,” said Florian Guillermet, SESAR JU Executive Director.

About SESAR: As the technological pillar of the Single European Sky initiative, SESAR aims to modernize and harmonize air traffic management in Europe. The SESAR Joint Undertaking (SESAR JU) was established in 2007 as a public-private partnership to support this endeavor. It does so by pooling the knowledge and resources of the entire ATM community in order to define, research, develop and validate innovative technological and operational solutions. Founded by the European Union and Eurocontrol, the SESAR JU currently has 15 members, who together with their partners and affiliate associations represent over 80 companies working in Europe and beyond. The SESAR JU also works closely with staff associations, regulators, airport operators and the scientific community.
